What to wear? Top five favorite accessories for winter solstice / holiday / Christmas / New Year's party
Posted by Lisa Johnson on
Last year, I got invited to a super fancy Christmas party at one of my boyfriend's college fraternity brother's houses. Actually, it wasn't at his house, but inside a big barn on his property, for which he had moved around his car collection to insert a moving bar in the center of the room. Some of the collectible autos were along the walls, and at least one was hanging from the ceiling! A photo op dream! Most of the holiday parties I am invited to, and there are not many, involve parents of my children's friends, and often we are...

What Gets Us Through: Trauma and the Importance of Physical Strength in Healing
Posted by Lisa Johnson on
After nearly eighteen years of a fairly stable relationship, I learned that my husband had begun an affair with a girl thirty years his junior. Stunning for anyone, yes, but more so was that my partner, whose judgment I had always respected, confessed that he and the girl had actually never met. Several sites linking her to German porn made no difference; he was convinced she was his soulmate and promised to marry her within two weeks of their email correspondence. A few months into the rocky navigation of all attempts to save a doomed marriage, my son's best friend shot himself in the head...

Taking Chances on Strangers: Finding Trust in the World
Posted by Lisa Johnson on
Having an online business forces me to deal with some crazies, but overwhelmingly, I have found that the virtual world is full of really nice people. A couple of weeks ago, an Ebay user sent a question about a pair of vegan combat boots which I was selling. She was concerned that after having placed a bid, the soles might be damaged. They weren't, but it turned into a conversation about the best type of epoxy glue to use for repairing not only shoes, but making mosaic mirrors, which I had delved into a few years ago. Turns out,...

Football Jerseys and Funkadelica: Fashion As A Bridge Between Strangers
Posted by Lisa Johnson on
I am dating the male equivalent of the soccer mom. He has two boys, who each play on four different sports teams, and he coaches so much that I can't keep track. For work, he runs a football gaming site he himself created, and is passionate about the sport. I had never been to a game in my life, not even homecoming in high school or college. He is the last type of person I ever thought I would be dating, and on top of the sports fanaticism, he is a former frat boy. But somehow, we got together and it feels...

To Splurge or Not to Splurge: Drooling At the New York Renaissance Faire
Posted by Lisa Johnson on
At sixteen, the first guy I truly fell in love with took me on one of the most romantic dates ever: to the New York Renaissance Faire in Tuxedo, NY, and it has remained one of my favorite festivals of all time. He bought me a crown of flowers which I wore in my hair, on occasion, for the next ten years plus, and it always reminded me of that perfect day, long after he had disappeared. I loved everything about the early Renaissance Festivals, from the mud shows where the comedians dove into and actually consumed the wet...
