Signed MARIANA MARIAN FOSTER CURTISS Art Painting WATERCOLOR Boy Vintage

  • 49999

Signed ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR PAINTING / art work / artwork by artist, Mariana (Marian Foster Curtiss) of a young child / boy in silver metallic wood frame, obviously vintage.  Titled "Christopher." In frame, measures approx 8.35" tall, 6.65" long.

From Worthpoint website: "Ms. Curtiss was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1909, and passed away in 1978, while living in New York. When she was little, Ms. Curtiss took drawing lessons and loved playing in her oversized doll house, which was actually made from a piano crate. This started her passion for art, we well as dolls.

She studied art in the United States, as well as in Paris. During the Depression, Ms. Curtiss worked for the Works Progress Administration where she drew old toys and dolls in museums. This then led to her career of writing and illustrating children's books, using her dolls as the characters. Her illustrations were very unique, because she did them in watercolor and gouache using a Chinese ink stick. While illustrating under her pseudonym of Mariana, she also illustrated works for others, including Janice Brustlein's Little Bear series.

Ms. Curtiss' own books were:

HOTSPUR (1953)

THE JOURNEY OF BANGWELL PUTT (1945)

MISS FLORA MCFLIMSEY AND THE BABY NEW YEAR (1951)

MISS FLORA MCFLIMSEY AND THE LITTLE LAUGHING WATER (1954)

MISS FLORA MCFLIMSEY'S BIRTHDAY (1952)

MISS FLORA MCFLIMSEY'S CHRISTMAS EVE (1949)

MISS FLORA MCFLIMSEY'S EASTER BONNET (1951)
